Why Buy from Louis Martin
The vintage Rolex market has refinished dials, polished cases, and mismatched parts that most listings do not disclose. Two watches with the same reference and year can be priced thousands of dollars apart once you see them in person.
We handle vintage Rolex watches every week. We know what original looks like, what has been altered, and what that costs you down the line.

What Changes Value in a Vintage Rolex
The four things we look at on every piece are:
- Dial originality
- Case condition
- Hand authenticity
- Service history.
For a full breakdown of how these factors play out across specific references, read our vintage Rolex buying guide.
Rolex serial numbers follow a documented production sequence. We cross-reference the serial number against the dial, movement, and case to confirm all components are consistent with the same production period. A dial, case, and movement that span different eras is a clear red flag..
We open every watch. We verify the correct caliber for the reference, assess movement condition, and look for evidence of tampering or incorrect parts. A movement in original condition with documented service history tells us how the watch has been cared for.
We examine printing quality, lume plots, font details, and aging pattern under magnification. Original dials have specific characteristics by reference and era. A refinished dial is one of the most common issues in the vintage Rolex market and one of the most damaging to value.
Rolex case backs carry specific engravings corresponding to reference numbers, production periods, and case materials. We verify these against known production records on every piece.
On later vintage references, the engraved rehaut and crown logo placement help confirm period authenticity. On models from 2002 onward, a small etched crown on the crystal near 6 o'clock is visible under magnification. These details are easy to fake poorly and easy to verify if you know what to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Authenticity comes from consistent details across the case, dial, movement, and serial number. The dial should show aging that matches the watch's production period. The movement caliber should match the reference. The serial number should align with all other components. The simplest protection is buying from a dealer who authenticates in-house and stands behind what they sell.
Value depends on reference, condition, originality, and current market demand. The same reference can vary significantly in price based on dial originality, case polish, and documentation. We offer watch appraisals and can give you a direct number based on the actual watch in hand.
Sports references — Submariner, GMT-Master, and Daytona — have the strongest long-term records. Datejust references in original condition have also held well. Condition and originality matter more than reference in most cases.
Yes. If you have a vintage Rolex you want to sell, bring it in. We evaluate in-house and make direct offers. Consignment is also available if that works better for your situation.
